Optical Detection of Low Levels of Biological Compounds and Organisms

Presented by:

Steven R. Auger

bioDevice Partners

Jamestown, RI

Optical methods have become the first line tool for the quantitation, detection, and observation of phenomena for Diagnostics, Bioterrorism Prevention, Life Sciences and Drug Discovery.  Such applications put unique demands on the design and components of the optical system.  They often require detection or imaging of light at extremely low levels emanating from objects that are fleeting, photo-unstable or fragile.  The challenges of working with such systems will be presented from a practical viewpoint with real-world examples of total system design requirements, approaches, tools, and pitfall avoidance.  Future challenges and enabling technologies will also be discussed.
