ABSTRACT
Photonic crystals are artificial multidimensional periodic
nanostructures, which can be designed by the photonic band theory. They
have great potentials for various novel optoelectronic devices due to
their photonic bandgap and anomalous dispersion characteristics. In this
lecture, fundamentals to possible applications of photonic crystals, and
their recent topics such as nanolasers, slow light, negative index
optics, etc. will be overviewed. Besides, the other competitive photonic
nanostructures, i.e. high index contrast (HIC) waveguides and cavities,
will also be presented with the topics of silicon photonics.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Toshihiko Baba (Member '93) received the Ph.D. Degree from Yokohama
National University (YNU) in 1990. Then, he became a research associate
of Tokyo Institute of Technology, and an associate professor and a full
professor of YNU in 1990, 1994 and 2005, respectively. In these 20
years, he has studied on antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides,
vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), microdisk lasers,
photonic crystals and Si photonics. He reported many pioneering works on
photonic nanostructure devices such as nanolasers, slowlight waveguides,
negative refractive optics, high efficiency LEDs, holey VCSELs, Si wire
H-tree circuits and ultra-compact AWGs. He is a member of IEICE, JSAP,
OSA, and APS. He is the author of 137 journal papers. He served as an
invited speaker at 57 international conferences including LEOS Annual
Meeting Short Course from 2003 - 2005, and received eight academic
awards.
