Meeting Information

March 24, 2006 (Tuesday)

Sixth 2008-2009 Meeting of the National Capital Section of the Optical Society of America

" PHOTOMETRIC STANDARDS AND SOLID STATE LIGHTING"

Dr. Yoshi Ohno,

Optical Technology Division, NIST

ABSTRACT
NIST maintains the standards for units of light measurement such as watt, lumen, and candela. The definitions of these units and how NIST establishes such standards will be presented. Further, the energy efficiency of light sources, in particular, the state-of-the-art white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and solid-state lighting (SSL) will be discussed. SSL is expected to reduce the total energy consumed by lighting to half and to lead to tremendous energy savings to the nation and world. Challenges in achieving 200 lumens per watt, design of spectra, and color quality issues will be discussed.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Dr. Ohno is the Leader of the Optical Sensor Group in he Optical Technology Division of NIST. He did his undergraduate studies at Kyoto Institute of Technology, and earned his Ph.D. from Kyoto University. He has been with NIST since 1992. His current research includes Photometry, Flashing Light Photometric Standards, Colorimetry, LED Measurements, Vision Science, Color Rendering of Light Sources, and Spectral Color Measurements.
