Leadership
- INTRODUCTION
This brief overview is to introduce new members to the board of the OSSD and to
make clear what their responsibilities will be, and since the OSSD administration
changes annually, to provide continuity of programs and duties. The current meeting
format of the OSSD includes 8 or 9 full membership meetings each year, usually
from September through June, consisting of dinner, a brief business meeting and
a program. Board meetings are called as needed by the president or a majority
of the board. While meetings are usually kept informal, they are generally guided
by Robert's Rules of Order.

of the Board The Board is the most powerful part of an organization, it sets
the policies, it reviews all of the operational data, it approves or challenges
any organizational activity, and controls expenditures. For a Board to be effective
it's activities and organizational structure should be designed around the goals
it wishes to accomplish. Therefore, basic to a Board's proper functioning is it's
ability to make clear decisions about what it wants to do, followed by decisions
on how to do it, who will do it, within what time period and how the results will
be evaluated. In order to achieve this the Board should review the OSSD statement
of purpose regularly and develop and prioritize goals. Even though these may remain
fairly constant, the activities of OSSD can change as opportunities develop. It
is the Board that bears the final responsibility for the successful performance
of the organization.
- Responsibilities
of the Board The Board of Directors is responsible for four functional areas:
policy administration, finance, public relations, and interaction with the national
office and other professional organizations.
Specific duties include:
- Maintaining overview of
organizational operations.
- Long
range planning for the organization.
-
Decision making for the organization.
