SPEAKER: This evening's speaker will be Mary Howland, Optical Engineering Manager, Signet Armorlite, Inc.

TALK: Opthalmic Lens Design and Evaluation. The most common opthalmic lenses are simple positive and negative meniscus lenses used to correct far and near sightedness (hyperopia and myopia). The designs of these lenses are straight forward and have been perfected for many years. The most interesting challenges in ophthalmic lens design comes with the single focus aspheric lenses and variable focus progressive lense. The optical properties of these lenses will be explained along with various techniques used to evaluate the designs. An overview of the methods used to manufacture general aspheric lenses will also be provided.
