"Developments in Commercial Ultrafast Lasers"
by
Steve Butcher Ph.D.
Coherent, Santa Clara
Ultrafast
lasers have developed over the past few years into more compact and reliable sources
of femtosecond and picosecond radiation. Scientific application-specific lasers,
robust systems tailored for emerging industrial applications, and more complex
high performance systems are now available. This talk discusses the commercial
lasers, technologies and applications involved.
Steve
Butcher is a senior product manager for ultrafast lasers at Coherent Inc (Santa
Clara). He has worked at Coherent for 6 years. Prior to that he was with Continuum,
a manufacturer of pulse solid-state lasers, for 17 years. Steve holds a B.Sc.
and Ph.D. in physics from Edinburgh University and Heriot-Watt University respectively.
This
meeting will be held at the San Diego Office of Fish & Richardson P.C. (www.fr.com).
Fish & Richardson P.C. is a national law firm with 9 offices and provides legal
services in intellectual property, litigation, and corporate areas.
Professor
Kleinfeld has generously offered a tour of his laboratory after the Coherent Laser
talk at our meeting ( http://physics.ucsd.edu/neurophysics/kleinfeldcv.html
). At 8:30 PM, we will leave Fish and Richardson and commute over to UCSD to see
the facility. Maps and parking fees will be provided at the meeting.
